Updated Thursday, Aug. 21, 2014 | 6:04 p.m.

A motorcyclist who was critically injured while speeding off this morning after police tried to make a traffic stop has been identified as 23-year-old Eric Rejman, Metro Police said.

A Metro officer attempted to stop a driver about 10:15 a.m. in a Spring Valley neighborhood for having an unregistered motorcycle, Metro Officer Laura Meltzer said.

The driver failed to stop and took off at a high rate of speed, Meltzer said. Rejman traveled southbound on Ravenwood Drive on his 2002 Suzuki GSX-R 750 and failed to safely negotiate a bend in the road near Spring Valley Parkway, according to a media release from Metro. According to the release, Rejman separated from the motorcycle and slid on the sidewalk until striking a stop sign at the intersection.

The officer was not pursuing the motorcycle at the time of the crash, Meltzer said.

Rejman was transported to University Medical Center with serious injuries and is in critical condition, police said.
