letter to the editor:

Added sanctions may backfire

I had a tremendous opportunity at the end of July, as a member of a peace delegation, to visit my senators’ and representative’s offices in Washington, D.C. Berim.org and the Win Without War coalition sponsored the delegation.

We have a four-month extension to promote peace with Iran. I was thrilled that our majority leader, Harry Reid, is willing to give Iran the opportunity to do the right thing and honor the extension.

I have a personal connection with Iran, going back to my maternal grandparents, who immigrated to the United States at the beginning of the 20th century, from Persia, now Iran.

Diplomacy is the only answer to prevent nuclear advancement. Having lived through Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan, I am familiar with the horrors of war.

Senators and representatives who support more sanctions need to realize that sanctions brought Iran to the table, but more sanctions would certainly cause Iran to leave the table.

My hope is that all of Congress supports diplomacy in order to avoid another conflict in the Middle East.
