RENO — The state Board of Regents has approved the University of Nevada's plans for an extensive renovation of Mackay Stadium on the Reno campus.

The first major renovation of the football stadium since 1996 is expected to cost $11.5 million.

It calls for the addition of an 8,500-square-foot club level on the west side, and an expansion of the east-side suites to include outdoor patio space. It also will replace bleachers with more than 4,000 permanent chair-backs, add restrooms and make the stadium more compliant with disability laws.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reports the regents approval Friday means the bond used to finance the project soon will kick into place, and construction companies will begin to submit bids. It's scheduled to be completed in time for the 2016 season opener.
