Desert Springs Hospital goes on lockdown after nearby robbery

A local hospital went on lockdown this afternoon after a nearby store was robbed, a hospital spokesperson said.

Desert Springs Hospital Medical Center, located at 2075 East Flamingo Road near South Maryland Parkway, went on lockdown as a precaution about 4:30 p.m. after a robbery at a nearby Dollar General Market, spokeswoman Gretchen Papez said.

The lockdown ended about 5:50 p.m., she said.

Metro Police made a perimeter in the area after receiving a call about an armed robbery at the store around 4:15 p.m., Lt. Dave Valenta said.

Valenta said it appears a man entered the store with a gun, took the cash drawer from a register and fled the scene on foot.

No injuries were reported, and it does not appear any shots were fired, he said.

The suspect is described as a black man about 5 feet 8 inches tall with a stocky build. He was last seen wearing a red shirt and black pants, Valenta said.

The man has not been located, but robbery detectives are on scene.

Papez said security guards are stationed in front of entrances during a hospital lockdown, and though people are allowed to exit, no one can enter the building.
