letter to the editor:

Details are lost in racial outcry

Lost in the racial outcry over the decision to not indict white police officer Daniel Pantaleo in the death of black petty criminal Eric Garner is the key fact that the attempt to arrest Garner was overseen by a black female police sergeant.

And the real reason for this unnecessary death of a petty criminal selling “illegal” cigarettes is that the combined taxes in New York on a pack of cigarettes are $8, for a total selling price of $10! The same pack in South Carolina sells for $1.75. Does anybody know about Prohibition and its aftermath?

Garner resisted arrest violently. Garner, 43, had a history of more than 30 arrests dating to 1980, on charges including assault and grand larceny. At the time of his death, Garner was out on bail after being charged with illegally selling cigarettes, driving without a license, marijuana possession and false impersonation.

In the meantime, the protesters keep marching, burning, looting, encouraged by some national leaders. I expect that. In the words of a meme posted on Facebook by Sarah Palin, shortly President Barack Obama will proclaim the looters to be “undocumented shoppers.”
