letter to the editor:

Support inclusive conservation plan

The sage grouse was all over the headlines last week as the Western Governors Association and Interior Secretary Sally Jewell met, in part, to discuss its fate.

As a Nevada sportsman, I am pleased to see the governors and the feds take a broad-based approach to protecting the bird’s habitat. We have an excellent opportunity to look at new approaches that bring together groups with an interest in sharing public lands and a commitment to conservation of habitat and wildlife.

Let’s try an approach that includes all the Western states. Let’s get local governments involved and include ranchers, hunters, campers, anglers, bird watchers, OHV trail users, and our many outdoors families who have long enjoyed and valued our Western life.

Nevada’s Greater Sage-Grouse Conservation Plan, in combination with a strong Bureau of Land Management plan, is part of a solution that encourages both protection and continued use of our public lands for Nevada families. Let’s get behind the effort and protect our Western lands and wildlife for all users.
