7 motorcycles crash on Blue Diamond Road, killing 1

Updated Friday, Dec. 19, 2014 | 9 p.m.

One man is dead and one was critically injured after a collision involving seven motorcycles and a pickup truck on Blue Diamond Road near the Red Rock turnoff, Nevada Highway Patrol said.

Officials received reports about 1:45 p.m. of the crash at mile marker 16, Trooper Loy Hixson said.

An investigation indicates two motorcycles passed an RV on the road before slowing down. Two other motorcyclists also passed the RV but didn't realize the drivers in front of them had slowed. The four collided, and another set of motorcyclists who passed the RV crashed into the other motorcycles. A separate motorcyclist then crashed into the other six vehicles, Hixson said.

One of the motorcycles lost control and crashed into a pickup truck, but the RV was not involved in the crash, Hixson said.

A motorcyclist in his 20s was pronounced dead on scene while another motorcyclist in his 20s was airlifted to University Medical Center in critical condition, Hixson said.

The other five motorcyclists suffered minor injuries, and no one in the pickup truck was injured, Hixson said.

All lanes of traffic were reopened by 6 p.m. Traffic had been delayed, with the backup reaching about 4 miles in each direction during the crash investigation, Hixson said.
