Officer-involved shooting

A man who had threatened to kill his elderly father was shot by a Metro Police officer on Sunday after he refused to drop a pair of butcher knives, authorities said.

The incident unfolded about 2:30 p.m. after officers were dispatched to a house in the 3200 block of Liahona Way to investigate a report of a domestic disturbance, police said.

A 72-year-old man reported that his 46-year-old son was threatening to kill him and throwing things around inside the house, police said.

When officers arrived, a man was outside with two butcher knives, police said. He “advanced aggressively” toward officers and refused several orders to drop the knives, police said.

One officer fired several rounds, striking the man, police said. He was taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, where he underwent surgery, police said. His condition was not immediately available.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing, police said. The identity of the officer involved in the shooting will be released after 48 hours.
