Coroner IDs man killed in chain-reaction motorcycle wreck

Updated Monday, Dec. 22, 2014 | 5 p.m.

A motorcyclist killed in a crash involving multiple bikes and a pickup truck Friday has been identified as 28-year-old Kevin Rubio, the Clark County Coroner’s Office said.

Rubio, a North Las Vegas resident, died of multiple blunt force head trauma in the crash on Blue Diamond Road near the Red Rock turnoff, officials said.

A group of motorcycles was headed north on Blue Diamond, south of mile marker 16, when a single collision caused a chain-reaction crash, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

An investigation indicates a 2005 Honda motorcycle hit the left side of a 2005 Suzuki, ejecting the rider of the Honda, officials said. As the Honda slid, it hit the right side of a 2014 Yamaha, whose rider was also ejected, the release said.

The man on the Honda was flown to University Medical Center in critical condition and later reported to be in stable condition, officials said.

The 2006 Kawasaki that Rubio was riding hit one of the downed motorcycles, ejecting him, too, officials said. Rubio, who slammed into another rider while in the air, was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.

Another motorcyclist on a 2007 Suzuki slowed down and wrecked after trying to avoid the crash, officials said.

During the crash, one of the motorcycles also hit a Chevy pickup, officials said.

Despite initial reports of additional vehicles involved in the crash, it appears the five motorcycles and one truck were the only vehicles involved, Trooper Chelsea Webster said.
