Second information session set on new immigration rules

Legal experts and Latino advocates will hold an information session next month for people navigating upcoming changes in immigration policy.

The event, hosted by Latino advocacy group Hermandad Mexicana, will start at 5 p.m. on Jan. 16 at 2915 W. Charleston Blvd., Suite 4.

The meeting aims to help undocumented immigrants better understand President Barack Obama’s recently announced executive action, which will protect as many as 5 million people living in the country illegally. About 150 people crammed into the Hermandad offices when Obama announced the new deal on Nov. 20.

Pereira, who also helped lead another information forum Dec. 18 at the downtown Mexican Consulate office, said she hopes the events help quell the spread of misinformation, rumors and confusion about the directive.

“We all jumped with joy because a sliver of hope emerged,” Pereira told the group of immigrants who gathered at the Consulate offices on Dec. 18. Organizers, meanwhile, handed out pamphlets with information about the new rules.

“But now is the time to wait and learn more.”

Elizabeth Palafox, Nevada director for Mi Familia Vota, said, “It’s better for people to come up with a million and one questions now; that way they can start figuring out what kind of case they might have and how complex it is.”
