Warming stations will open for people who need shelter during cold spell

Freezing temperatures and the possibility of snow have prompted several locations around the valley to open their doors to people seeking shelter.

Warming stations around the Las Vegas Valley will allow homeless people and anyone else looking for shelter to stay warm on New Year's Eve and beyond.

People can dial 211 to find a nearby warming station or visit helphopehome.org.

Some locations will accept people with pets, as long as the pets are in carriers or are restrained by leashes.

Locations open Wednesday include:

• Black Mountain Recreation Center, 599 Greenway Road, Henderson, 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

• Cambridge Recreation Center, 3930 S. Cambridge St., Las Vegas, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., accepts people with pets on leashes or in carriers.

• Dr. William U. Pearson Community Center, 1625 W. Carey Ave., North Las Vegas, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., accepts people with pets on leashes or in carriers.

• Hollywood Recreation Center, 1650 S. Hollywood Blvd., Las Vegas, 6 a.m. to 5 p.m., accepts people with pets on leashes or in carriers.

• Stupak Community Center, 251 W. Boston Ave., Las Vegas, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

• Walnut Recreation Center, 3075 N. Walnut Road, Las Vegas, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., accepts people with pets on leashes or in carriers.

The Southern Nevada Regional Planning Coalition’s Inclement Weather Shelter Program offers daytime and overnight shelter. Those locations include:

• Catholic Charities, 1511 Las Vegas Blvd. North, Las Vegas, open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 8 a.m., men only.

• The Salvation Army, 33 W. Owens Ave., North Las Vegas, open 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 6 a.m.

• The Shade Tree, 1 W. Owens Ave., North Las Vegas, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 a.m., women and children only.

The Inclement Weather Shelter Program is expected to provide winter shelter through late March.
