letter to the editor:

People deserve to hear from Obama

George Will’s Jan. 26 column “Political exhibitionism” is possibly a new low for him in his disrespect for President Barack Obama. As with so many others, his discourse manages to completely separate the man from the office he was elected to — thereby denying him the respect he deserves.

Will attempts to pin this term on Obama by groaning his way through what the president was likely to say at the State of the Union address. He invokes Justice Antonin Scalia’s remark that the State of the Union is a “cheerleading session.” His assessment of the Constitution’s requirement for this gathering is “mild.”

While it is true that a huge percentage of Americans have no grasp of what is happening in our country on a day-to-day basis, they are “mildly” entitled to hear from their president anyway. President Obama is doing his job. He works for us and he owes us reporting on what he is doing.
