Flu death toll climbs to 12 in Southern Nevada

The flu virus continues to spread throughout Clark County, and health officials now say it has claimed the life of a pediatric patient – the 12th flu-related death in Southern Nevada this season.

Jennifer Sizemore, public information manager with the Southern Nevada Health District, said the district received the report of the patient’s death last week. The district does not release details, such as name, age or gender, in its reports.

Since the beginning of flu season, three young adults, three middle-aged individuals, and five elderly people have died from the flu, according to the district. Every year seasonal flu causes serious illnesses and deaths in the United States health officials said.

The most at-risk patients include children younger than 5 years old, adults older than 65 years old and pregnant women. Health officials urge everyone to get a yearly flu vaccination.
