A winter storm pummeling the East Coast and the South is wreaking havoc on flight schedules at McCarran International Airport.
Major airlines that fly routes east of the Mississippi River are allowing passengers to rebook flights with no penalty as a series of powerful storms takes aim at Boston, New York, Washington, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Atlanta and Charlotte, N.C.
Major delays also have been reported in Miami, Orlando, Tampa and Jacksonville, Fla.
Ice storms in Atlanta have crippled operations for Delta Air Lines, which has a hub operation at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
FlightStats.com, which tracks commercial airline flights worldwide, reported 26 flights scheduled to arrive at McCarran later today already have been canceled as well as 15 departing flights.
Dozens of other flights are expected to have delays of an hour or more as airline networks bog down.
Most of McCarran’s flight delays result from bad weather in other parts of the country. Airport officials encourage passengers traveling today to call the airlines for updates on the status of flights.
