Man killed when car overturns, hits building

Updated Friday, Feb. 14, 2014 | 2:51 p.m.

A Las Vegas man was killed this morning after he failed to pull over for a traffic stop and instead sped away, losing control of his car, which overturned and slammed into a building, Metro Police said.

The crash happened about 4 a.m. on West Spring Mountain Road, west of South Decatur Boulevard.

A Metro patrol unit attempted to stop the 2011 Scion TC at Las Vegas Boulevard and Spring Mountain, but the car drove away west on Spring Mountain, police said. The patrol unit did not pursue the car, police said.

Witness statements and evidence indicate the car was in the left lane, approaching Decatur at a high rate of speed, when the driver lost control after crossing the intersection, police said.

The car went off the north side of the road where it hit a light pole, overturned and slammed into the side of Kilroy’s bar at 5020 Spring Mountain Road, police said.

The driver, a 35-year-old Las Vegas man, was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was not released, pending notification of family.

The intersection was closed for several hours after the wreck.

The death was the 10th traffic-related fatality Metro’s jurisdiction this year.

The crash is under investigation by Metro’s Accident Investigation Section.
