I am shocked at the ignorant and distasteful title of the new casino, the Cromwell.
Although the company says the establishment is named after an explorer, the name still has horrible connotations with Oliver Cromwell, who was responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands of innocent Irish people from 1640-1655.
Irish people, and Irish Americans, associate this name with bigotry, hate, prejudice and evil. The word carries all the horror of a terrible, dark time for a whole people.
It’s like naming a casino “The Hitler.” Even if it’s named for a different Hitler, it doesn’t make it any better. What a sad day.
I’ll never go there, and I’m deeply disappointed.
