Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid listens during a news conference about the budget Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013, on Capitol Hill in Washington.

WASHINGTON — According to a CNN report, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid privately approached former Defense Secretary Robert Gates about becoming Barack Obama’s running mate in his first, 2008 election, as Gates tells it on page 262 of his new memoir, which has yet to be released.

Publicly, Reid’s a little fuzzy about the reported conversation.

When asked at a press conference today if he pressed Gates to consider seeking the vice presidency, Reid wrinkled his face and offered a simple: “It’s possible.”

According to CNN’s report, Gates described the conversation — which Reid had wanted to keep private — as “so weird.”
