Police standoff with man at apartment ends after 2 hours

Police standoff

A man barricaded himself in an apartment for two hours today, prompting the evacuation of surrounding residents.

Metro Police responded about 9 a.m. after a person asked officers to conduct a welfare check at an apartment in the 1600 block of Stevens Street, near Owens Avenue. When officers arrived, the man slammed the door on them and refused to come out, police spokeswoman Laura Meltzer said.

Some residents were evacuated to the apartment complex clubhouse. Metro SWAT officers took the man into custody about two hours later, Meltzer said. Officials did not say how the standoff ended or whether the man would face any charges.

Police did not have information about whether the man was armed or if anyone was inside the apartment with him.
