letter to the editor:

Honor veterans of the Cold War

On the Fourth of July, I again will return salutes in recognition of my active participation in three of this country’s wars: FDR’s Lend Lease war before Pearl Harbor, all of World War II in the submarine force, and the Korean assault on ammunition supply ships along with other unreported recon activities.

But I will also wonder when the veterans of our Cold War with the Soviet Union will appear alongside me.

A period of at least 40 years in which lethal armaments of our armed forces were on around-the-clock watches and readiness, instantly available to return any of the nuclear weapons programmed against us, as were ours in retaliation.

All of this was unreported, same as most of my personal active duty, due to their nature and required secrecy.
