51s slugger wins Triple-A home run derby

Las Vegas 51s slugger Allan Dykstra won the Triple-A home run derby tonight in Durham, N.C., edging Francisco Pena from Omaha of the Kansas Royals organization in the final round.

Dykstra, who had 12 home runs for the 51s during the first half of the Pacific Coast League season, hit three home runs in the first round of the derby and four in the second to advance to the finals.

A home run on his second swing in the final round was the contest-winner. The event was televised by MLB Network, bringing nice notoriety to the 51s.

Dykstra, who last season hit a career-best 21 home runs, will represent the 51s Wednesday in the Triple-A all-star game, also in Durham.

Monday, top prospect Noah Syndergaard of the 51s pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the U.S. for the save in a 3-2 victory in the Futures Games in Minneapolis.

The 51s returns to action Thursday with a series at Salt Lake.
