A pedestrian is dead after he was involved in a hit-and-run accident Sunday morning, Las Vegas Metro Police said.

The accident occurred at 9:44 a.m. near the intersection of Sahara Avenue and Las Verdes Street, near South Valley View Boulevard.

Police originally believed that the victim had died after being ejected from a vehicle, but further investigation shows the victim was struck while working on the side of the road, Metro Lt. Jack Owen said.

Witnesses say the pedestrian, who was a subcontractor, was in a bus lane cutting asphalt when he was struck by a Ford F-150 traveling westbound on Sahara Avenue.

The driver of the Ford then reportedly hit the back of a 2001 Chevy 4500 that was parked in the bus lane, to the west of the pedestrian, police said.

The driver of he Ford fled the scene on foot and hid in the dumpster of a nearby apartment complex. He was soon taken into custody for leaving the scene and failing field sobriety tests, police said.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

Drivers can expect delays in the area, as westbound Sahara is closed.

The accident is currently under investigation.
