A late-innings meltdown doomed the Las Vegas 51s to a 5-2 loss to Salt Lake today at Cashman Field.
Las Vegas starter Matthew Bowman held the Bees (45-63) scoreless through seven innings, facing just two batters over the minimum, but the 51s imploded in the eighth.
After Bowman gave up a leadoff homer to Ian Stewart and back-to-back singles, the 51s gave up another run on a bunt and then gave up two more by committing a pair of errors on another bunt.
The Bees tacked on a run in the ninth after Stewart led off the inning by banging a double off the leftfield wall.
Las Vegas (60-49) scored in the third inning when first baseman Brandon Allen came home on a ground ball from leadoff hitter Anthony Seratelli. Allen led off the inning with a single, stole second and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by catcher Juan Centeno.
Shortstop Matt Reynolds hit a home run to lead off the sixth inning for the 51s.
Bowman (1-1) got the loss. Bees reliever Justin Richardson (3-3) got the win.
The series continues at 12:05 p.m. Sunday at Cashman Field.
