letter to the editor:

Graduation rule is ‘a real travesty’

The Clark County School District has determined that 2014 seniors who have passed their classes but not all of the proficiency exams will not be able to participate in the graduation ceremonies. This will be the first year that this is being done. Previously, those who hadn’t passed all three proficiency exams could march with their classmates and either a diploma or certificate of attendance was sent at a later date. Another chance to pass the exam/exams is given during the summer.

Since the proficiency system is being dropped, why change the rules for graduation participation this one year? It will be changed again with the freshman class next year.

I understand the CCSD is the only school district in Nevada changing the graduation ceremony participation this year. Why? It won’t change graduation rate statistics. I consider this a real travesty for Clark County’s high school seniors.
