Navy: Suspect in Virginia stabbing arrested

Updated Friday, June 6, 2014 | 3:14 p.m.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — The Navy says law enforcement officials have arrested the man suspected of stabbing a fellow sailor near a naval hospital, ending an hours-long manhunt.

Capt. Michael "Jake" Johansson, commanding officer of Naval Support Activity Hampton Roads, says Petty Officer 3rd Class Wilbur Harwell was arrested on Friday in nearby Virginia Beach.

Earlier in the day, the Navy placed Naval Support Activity Hampton Roads, Portsmouth Annex, on a lockdown after the stabbing. The installation is home to Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, and the stabbing occurred outside the Navy Exchange. The lockdown was lifted after Harwell's arrest. The Navy says the victim is in critical condition after being stabbed in the neck and chest.
