Reid accused of illegal campaigning to help Flores

Reid And Local Officials Call For Immigration Reform

Steve Marcus

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) calls for comprehensive immigration reform at the Las Vegas Metro Chamber of Commerce Tuesday, May 27, 2014.

The Clark County Republican Party is accusing Sen. Harry Reid of breaking campaign finance laws in his zeal to get fellow Democrat Lucy Flores elected lieutenant governor.

County GOP Chairman Dave McKeon said in a complaint filed Friday with the Federal Election Commission Reid illegally asked corporations to donate money to Flores.

The second-term assemblywoman is expected to win Tuesday's Democratic primary. State Sen. Mark Hutchison and ex-state Sen. Sue Lowden are the favorites for the Republican nomination.

Flores is allowed to accept corporate money. But the GOP says Reid, as a federal politician, cannot solicit corporate money on her behalf.

Reid spokeswoman Kristin Orthman said Friday they are looking into the matter and taking steps to correct any problems. She said the complaint suggests Republicans fear Flores will win.
