Las Vegas visitor count jumps 3.2 percent in May

The number of visitors coming to Vegas jumped 3.2 percent in May compared with a year earlier, helped by an extra weekend night on the calendar and a bump in convention attendance.

A report released Friday by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority says almost 3.6 million people came to Sin City last month, compared with about 3.5 million last May.

Convention attendance climbed 14 percent year-over-year mostly because shows that weren't held in Las Vegas last year rotated in. Major events included the American Wind Energy Association conference, which brought in 10,000 attendees, and Coverings Show, a tile and stone expo that counted 23,000 people.

Guests paid more for rooms this May compared with last year. The average daily room rate jumped 8 percent to $128 per night.
