Many Republican leaders and candidates claim to be following their Christian beliefs. However, though Christ never mentioned contraception, abortion or gay marriage, for years the GOP has been obsessed with denying Americans access to those things.
But take a look at the things Christ actually did say. He encouraged us to heal the sick and feed the poor. So the Republicans in Congress fought health care reform, then wasted time trying to repeal it more than 50 times. Then Republican governors of half the states refused to give millions of the working poor access to Medicaid. The GOP cut food stamps and refused to renew unemployment benefits, making it even harder for struggling Americans to feed their families.
Christ told us that “it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” Yet the GOP continues to do everything possible to enrich and protect the wealthiest 0.01 percent of Americans.
If this is the Republican Party’s idea of Christianity, then I’m proud to call myself a Democrat and an atheist.
