letter to the editor:

Rethink how U.S. uses the Marines

I was watching a Marine recruiting commercial the other day. It reminded me that our military today has a mission that it is ill-suited for and does not belong doing.

Here is a quote from the commercial: “Where chaos looms, the few emerge. Marines move toward the sounds of tyranny, injustice and despair — with the courage and resolve to silence them. By ending conflict, instilling order and helping those who can’t help themselves, Marines face down the threats of our time.”

This commercial is advocating using the Marines to nation-build in screwed-up areas around the world. Our military should be used to protect us and launch counter-strikes if we are attacked.

Look at the world. Who believes even our military, alone, can resolve the “tyranny, injustice and despair” in it, especially without bankrupting us in the attempt?

We need to rethink the present strategy.
