Tornado warning grounds flights at Denver airport

DENVER — Flights at Denver International Airport are grounded because of severe thunderstorms that have produced at least one confirmed tornado.

Some arriving flights are likely to be diverted to Colorado Springs because of Wednesday's storms. Part of the airport's grounds are included in a tornado warning for the Denver area, but the airport's terminal is not.

Some rotating clouds have been spotted outside of Denver. The National Weather Service reports one tornado has touched down east of the airport in Watkins.

A tornado watch is in effect until 8 p.m. for Denver and 10 surrounding counties, as well as Goshen, Laramie and Platte counties in southeastern Wyoming.

The storms have already dropped heavy rain and hail around the Denver area. Tornado sirens have gone off in Denver and surrounding communities.
