A fire Tuesday night left an abandoned downtown apartment building gutted, according to Las Vegas Fire & Rescue.

Fire investigators couldn’t determine what sparked the fire, fire department spokesman Tim Szymanski said in an email.

It’s the third time the vacant two-story building has caught fire since winter, he said.

Witnesses told investigators they had seen homeless people going in and out of the building on a routine basis, he said.

Initial reports indicated people were screaming for help, but when firefighters arrived on scene they did not find anyone, he said.

Firefighters searched the building twice for victims and found none, he said.
