Cooler weather expected to continue Tuesday

Snowfall on Mount Charleston over the weekend was just one sign of the cooler weather expected throughout the Las Vegas Valley over the next few days, according to the National Weather Service.

Snow dusted Mount Charleston's highest peaks in late September, but Friday marked the first day of snow this season in the lower, more populated elevations, meteorologist John Salmen said.

About 0.7 inches of snow and 0.38 inches of rain fell Friday near residential areas, Salmen said.

Further up the mountain near the Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort, about two inches of snow fell, he said. If things go according to schedule, the resort will open Nov. 28, according to resort spokeswoman Veronica Kawka.

The snowfall and this weekend's cooler temperatures were effects of a passing storm. Though it has already headed east, the valley will feel the storm's effects for the rest of the day today and into Tuesday with cooler temperatures than normal, Salmen said.

Today's forecasted high of 66 degrees with 10 to 15 mph winds is below the projected normal of 73 degrees based on past data, Salmen said. Most residents should see temperatures in the low 70s Tuesday that will reach nearly 80 degrees by Wednesday or Thursday, Salmen said. Temperatures should stay near 80 through the weekend, he said.

The northwest valley should expect 10 to 20 mph winds today and 10 to 15 mph winds Tuesday morning. Winds throughout the valley are expected to calm down by mid-day Tuesday, Salmen said.

Periods of alternating warm and cool temperatures this time of year are nothing out of the ordinary in Las Vegas.

"You can have those kind of wild swings during the fall here," Salmen said.
