Welcome to the postseason

Las Vegas Sun sports reporters Ray Brewer and Case Keefer transition into playoff mode and go over all of Friday's matchups.

Don’t expect much to change tonight in high school football’s Sunset Region.

Arbor View, Bishop Gorman, Centennial and Palo Verde host quarterfinal playoff games, looking to each advance to the Sunset semifinals for the fifth straight season. All four should win convincingly.

The parity is in the Sunrise Region.

Three teams finished with 3-1 records in the Southeast League, bumping region favorite Green Valley to a No. 3 seed for tonight’s playoff opener at four-time defending Sunrise champion Liberty. It’s a matchup most expected for the regional championship game, but Green Valley lost its top player — running back and defensive back Albert Lake — to a broken leg last week against Foothill and couldn’t recover in being upset.

Foothill, which kicked a field goal in the final seconds to beat Green Valley by 10 points and win a tie-breaker on a points differential for a home playoff game, takes on Las Vegas in arguably the most competitive game of the night.

In the Division I-A, two teams will qualify for the state semifinals tonight. Defending state champion Faith Lutheran hosts Desert Pines in the Southern League semifinals for a second straight season. Last year, Faith Lutheran rallied to edge Desert Pines, 48-41, in the same playoff round, and this year’s game should follow a similar script in being closely contested.

In the other semifinal, undefeated Moapa Valley is looking for its sixth straight state semifinal appearance against visiting Sierra Vista. Sierra Vista, in its first season in the classification, has a respectable 7-3 record and two of the state’s top offensive weapons in running backs Maliek Broady and Andrew Peterson.

After tonight, just 10 teams in Southern Nevada will have a game to play.
