Supporters: Enough signatures to get gun background checks on ballot

CARSON CITY — Supporters of a ballot initiative to require background checks for private gun sales say they have collected more than the required 101,667 signatures to get the issue before voters.

If the signatures are verified, the measure will be presented to the Legislature. If lawmakers don’t pass the measure, it would go on the 2016 election ballot for voters to decide.

The initiative says a person cannot sell a gun to another individual without a background check. It would impact private sales, including those conducted online and at gun shows.

There are some exceptions, such as the transfer of a gun between immediate family members.

The seller and the buyer would have to submit their personal information to a licensed gun dealer, who would run it through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System. The dealer would be able to charge a fee.

Gov. Brian Sandoval vetoed a similar measure that passed in the 2013 Legislature. Republicans, who voted against the measure, now have the majority in both houses of the state Legislature.
