Rebels quick hits:

Fremont Cannon kickoff time bumps UNLV basketball to the afternoon

Fremont Cannon

With a 27-22 win over the Wolf Pack, UNLV brought the Fremont Cannon back home after eight years of losses in 2013.

The Battle for the Fremont Cannon will kick off at night, so UNLV’s basketball game on Saturday, Nov. 29, will move to 3:30 p.m. to make room for the football game at 7:30 p.m., officials announced today.

The Rebels were scheduled to tip off against Albany at 7 p.m., but it was understood that if ESPN decided to have the UNLV-UNR football game at night, the basketball game would move to the afternoon. The Cannon game will air on ESPNU, which means for the second year of the Mountain West’s restructured TV bonus structure, UNLV will come up empty-handed.

The deal awards bonuses for games that appear on ESPN, ESPN2, ABC, CBS or NBC. The payout is $300,000 for weekday games and $500,000 for Saturday games that are played at Mountain West venues. UNLV and Hawaii have both been shut out of the money the past two seasons.

Nov. 29 will be a full day for UNLV athletics. The women’s basketball team tips off at noon against Delaware State, which then leads into the men’s first game after the trip to New York at 3:30 p.m. And after that, it’s a drive out to Sam Boyd Stadium to see if the Rebels (2-9, 1-5) can salvage something from this season by keeping the Cannon red.
