What they’re thankful for: Southern Nevada leaders reflect on the holiday

Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn G. Goodman speaks during the 2014 Las Vegas State of the City address at City Hall on Thursday evening.

The holiday spirit has arrived in Las Vegas as families and friends gather to share meals and reflect on the year that was.

There's been plenty to be thankful for in Las Vegas, whether it's the economy's continued rebound and declining unemployment, record numbers of visitors to the Strip or even just the nice weather.

The Las Vegas Sun reached out to Southern Nevada mayors and political leaders to find out what they're thankful for this year:

    • Henderson Mayor Andy Hafen

About two months ago, our 13-month-old granddaughter went into cardiac arrest. The last two months have been very stressful. But the one thing that has shone through this whole situation is how great a community we have.

Business people rallied around this little granddaughter, the hospital staff were the greatest, the residents, everybody keeping her in their thoughts and prayers.

The one thing I’m very thankful for this year is now our granddaughter is home and doing well. She’s still got a long way to go. Through all of this, what showed was how passionate and concerned this whole Southern Nevada community has been.

    • North Las Vegas Mayor John Lee

As 2014 draws to a close, I'm thankful for all of our committed and dedicated employees who work hard to serve our community every day and made it possible for us to submit a balanced budget without any layoffs. I'm also thankful for the business owners and North Las Vegas residents who never gave up on our town and are now experiencing what's it like to live in a "turnaround town" with a bright future of opportunity.

    • Clark County Commissioner Steve Sisolak

I’m thankful that the economy is continuing to improve, more people are being put back to work, unemployment is below 7 percent for the first time in years, and further gains are expected. This bodes well for a happy and prosperous holiday season for greater Las Vegas and all of Clark County.

    • Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman

I'm thankful for my family and the joys of being the mayor of this wonderful community.
