Long pass play gives Cheyenne final-minute win against Mojave

Anthony McConnico’s 52-yard touchdown pass to Ashton Lawson with 55 seconds to play Thursday gave the host Cheyenne High football team a 21-20 victory against Mojave.

Lawson wasn’t finished. On Mojave’s possession, he came up with an interception to seal the victory and help Cheyenne improve to 3-2 in the Division I-A Sunset.

Mojave led 14-7 at halftime after Ty Flanagan hauled in a 67-yard pass from Zach Arave with less than a minute to play before the break.

Flanagan scored again on a 6-yard run with nine minutes to play for a 20-15 Mojave lead, but Cheyenne wouldn’t be denied on its homecoming game. Mojave dropped its third straight league game, including two when it surrendered long pass plays in the final seconds.

Arave passed for 109 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for another 134 yards on 15 carries. Flanagan 142 rushing and a touchdown.

For Cheyenne, Zavieh Harrell had a third quarter touchdown run and more than 100 rushing yards. Deriontae Green also rushed for about 100 yards.
