UNLV Quick Hits:

Rebels picked 4th in preseason poll; Vaughn named league’s top freshman

Findlay Prep Guard Rashad Vaughn McDonald's All-American

Findlay Prep guard Rashad Vaughn is interviewed by members of the media while dining with teammates at a local McDonald’s on Thursday, March 27, 2014. He is the star of UNLV basketball’s 2014 recruiting class and now honored as a McDonald’s All-American.

UNLV was tabbed to finish fourth and Rashad Vaughn was the third straight Rebel to be named the Mountain West preseason Freshman of the Year, the league announced today.

This morning, the Mountain West released its preseason poll, which is voted on by media members from around the conference. After seeing the disparity between votes when some writers posted their picks last week, it seemed clear the only thing everyone would agree on is San Diego State at the top.

The Aztecs were a runaway No. 1, gathering all but one first-place vote and leading the point total by 108 over second-place Boise State. By comparison, only 43 points separate the Broncos from seventh-place Fresno State.

With no clear front-runner for Player of the Year, the winner was Wyoming’s Larry Nance, who made the last year’s all-conference first team, despite missing the last month with a torn ACL. The preseason Newcomer of the Year is San Diego State forward Angelo Chol, a transfer from Arizona. Vaughn joins sophomore Kendall Smith and former No. 1 overall pick Anthony Bennett as the preseason freshman pick.

Joining Nance on the first team are San Diego State’s Dwayne Polee and Winston Shepard, a Findlay Prep product, Boise State’s Anthony Drmic and Colorado State’s Daniel Bejarano. Here’s the full ranking of the teams:

1. San Diego State (34) — 383 points

2. Boise State (1) — 275

3. New Mexico — 270

4. UNLV — 269

5. Colorado State — 258

6. Wyoming — 256

7. Fresno State — 232

8. Nevada — 126

9. Air Force — 102

10. Utah State — 98

11. San Jose State — 41
