I-15 Repair After Flood Damage

A speed limit sign is shown by the side of Interstate 15 near Moapa Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2014. About 1 mile of freeway was severely damaged by runoff from Monday's storm. The Nevada Department of Transportation expects to have two lanes open by the weekend, a spokesman said. Launch slideshow »

Flood-damaged sections of Interstate 15 south of Mesquite reopened this afternoon, two days ahead of schedule.

All lanes reopened at 3 p.m. today, according to the Nevada Department of Transportation.

Flash flooding on Sept. 26 damaged the freeway 75 miles north of Las Vegas, restricting travel to one lane in either direction. In total, about three quarters of a mile of roadway was damaged.

“It was a massive logistical undertaking — coordinating men, trucks, and machines — to haul and place material from the quarry to the jobsite, while still ensuring traffic stays open and flowing,” NDOT spokesman Tony Illia said in a statement.

Las Vegas Paving was contracted for the job and has been repairing the interstate since September 30, NDOT said. The repairs cost $1.4 million and necessitated moving 45,000 cubic yards of dirt and laying down 400 tons of asphalt.

The repaired highway was built to withstand a 100-year flood, according to NDOT.
