Metro Police say mixed martial arts fighter War Machine attempted suicide while in custody at the Clark County Detention Center.

The 32-year-old fighter, whose birth name is Jonathan Koppenhaver, reportedly attempted to strangle himself about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday with a torn piece of linen that was tied to the leg of his bunk, according to a Metro news release issued today.

Koppenhaver was reportedly seated on the floor with his legs resting on the bunk.

A corrections officer cut the ligature and checked Koppenhaver's breathing, police said.

He was cleared by medical personnel about 9:45 p.m. and moved to medical isolation, where he was placed on suicide watch.

Officers said they located a suicide note.

Crime scene analysts responded to the scene.

Koppenhaver is accused of beating his ex-girlfriend, adult film star Christy Mack, and her friend, Corey Thomas, at Mack's home.

Koppenhaver faces more than 30 charges including attempted murder, battery and first-degree kidnapping.

He was scheduled for a preliminary hearing Friday in Justice Court, but his defense argued Wednesday to push back the court date.

His preliminary hearing is now scheduled for Nov. 14.
