Prosecutors: Doctor prescribed medicine for people who didn’t need it

A Las Vegas doctor accused of writing painkiller prescriptions for people he never treated and then creating records to pretend he'd worked with them has been ordered to nearly four years in prison.

Authorities say 49-year-old Dr. Victor Bruce of Swan Lake Medical Center was sentenced Thursday, after pleading guilty in July to conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance. He was told to report to federal prison by Jan. 16.

U.S. Attorney Daniel Bogden says Bruce worked with co-conspirators to sell oxycodone prescriptions to an undercover officer for $700 each.

Prosecutors say the Bruce knew he was writing prescriptions for customers who didn't need the medication.

Records from the Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners show Bruce's license is still active, but a complaint has been filed against him.
