Commencing Division 1A week

Las Vegas Sun sports reporters Ray Brewer and Case Keefer run through some of the plethora of playoff possibilities on the lower level before getting to their picks.

This week’s schedule of high school football games in Southern Nevada doesn’t feature many intriguing matchups in the Division-I. We’ll have to wait one week for the games of significance.

Centennial and Arbor View should be undefeated when they play Oct. 30 for the Northwest League championship in the final regular season game. Rivals Bishop Gorman and Palo Verde will play the same night for the Southwest League title. And, in the Northeast League, Liberty will travel to Las Vegas with another division on the line.

Here are this week’s high school football rankings as we come down the home stretch of the regular season.

1. Bishop Gorman (9-0): Gorman gets an extra week to prepare for the showdown with Palo Verde in what should determine the Southwest League champion. Up next: Oct. 30 at Palo Verde.

2. Arbor View (7-0): Arbor View can’t afford to look past Cimarron-Memorial and ahead to next week’s clash with Centennial Up next: Friday vs. Cimarron-Memorial

3. Centennial (7-0): Junior running back Rhamondre Stevenson is quickly becoming one of the area’s best players for the class of 2016. Up next: Friday at Desert Oasis

4. Green Valley (6-1): Green Valley and Canyon Springs always seem to play close games. And Green Valley always seems to prevail. Last week, the Gators topped the Pioneers by eight points, proving yet again they’ll be a tough out in next month’s playoffs. Up next: Friday at Eldorado

5. Liberty (6-2): Liberty gained momentum for the postseason by easily beating Silverado last week. The Patriots are off this week. Up next: Oct. 30 vs. Las Vegas

6. Palo Verde (5-2): Before Palo Verde can start game-planning for the regular season finale against Gorman, it has to beat a tough Legacy squad. Thursday at Legacy

7. Canyon Springs (4-3): There is no shame for Canyon Springs in losing a close game last week against Green Valley. Up next: Friday at Valley

8. Moapa Valley (8-0): Moapa Valley can wrap up the Division I-A Sunrise League title this week with a victory against Chaparral. Up next: Friday at Chaparral

9. Coronado (4-3): So far so good for Coronado’s revamped offense. Up next: Friday at Foothill

10. Desert Pines (7-1): Some feel the Jags are the team to beat in the Division I-A. We’ll soon find out. The playoffs start next week. Up next: Friday at Sunrise Mountain
