The College of Southern Nevada will field a women’s volleyball program starting in 2015, the junior college announced today.

It’s the third athletic program for CSN, joining baseball and softball. The volleyball team will be housed at the college’s Cheyenne campus in North Las Vegas.

“As we are building upon the foundation necessary for intercollegiate athletics at CSN, we are eager to offer additional sports and educational opportunities,” said Dexter Irvin, CSN’s athletics director, in a statement.

When Irvin was hired last January, he said adding programs was a top priority and that he would actively fundraise to create more opportunities.

CSN competes in the Scenic West Athletic Conference, which in volleyball is one of the nation’s top junior college leagues. The SWAC currently has three teams ranked in the top 10, including two in the top five.

“The competitive challenge for CSN will provide an excellent opportunity to help develop the athletic and academic talent that currently exists in Southern Nevada and the state,” Irvin said.

CSN in the late 1990s debuted its athletic program with baseball. For one season, it also had men’s and women’s basketball, but couldn’t sustain the sports because of a lack of funding.

The statement says a volleyball coach will soon be hired.
