California police chase ends with shooting in Jean

A California car chase ended in Jean Thursday evening as a man who tried to outrun police was shot, officials said.

Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Loy Hixson said the agency received a call from California Highway Patrol about 6:15 p.m. that officers were in pursuit of a Toyota FJ Cruiser about 40 miles from the Nevada border.

Metro Police responded to the call, Hixson said.

The SUV eventually stopped behind the Gold Strike casino and a man exited the vehicle, Hixson said.

Shots were fired and the man was struck, Hixson said.

He was flown to University Medical Center Trauma in critical condition.

Nevada Highway Patrol didn't arrive on scene until after the incident and is providing assistance with perimeter control, Hixson said.

The Clark County Fire Department was called to the scene about 7:10 p.m. to assist the suspect with the wound, department spokesman Jeff Buchanan said.
