Court upholds man’s conviction in 2011 slayings

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Supreme Court has rejected the appeal of Marco Guzman, sentenced to a life term in prison in the slaying of a Las Vegas man and his girlfriend.

The court said Guzman received a fair trial and failed to show his attorney was ineffective in representing him.

Guzman was convicted of the fatal shootings of Anthony Dickerson and Tamera Clewis at an apartment in the 1500 block of East Fremont Street in June 2011. Before the shooting, a fight broke out between Guzman and Dickerson over a gun, according to court documents.

Guzman got the weapon and Dickerson backed away with his hands in the air but was shot twice, according to court documents. During the fight, Clewis used a crowbar in an attempt to break up the brawl, according to documents.

The court Wednesday upheld the finding that Guzman was guilty of both first- and second-degree murder. He was sentenced to life in prison with a chance of parole after 30 years.
