Sophomore kicker Nicolai Bornand was named the Mountain West Special Teams Player of the Week, the league announced this morning. The honor comes after Bornand hit a 54-yard field goal in the second quarter of UNLV’s 13-12 victory against Northern Colorado on Saturday.

Bornand, the team’s long-distance kicker and a reserve linebacker, also kicked off the Rebels, sending two of them for touchbacks against the Bears. Bornand’s field goal tied for the longest in program history and set a new league record for longest field goal made by a sophomore.

Bornand is 2-for-2 this year on field goals including a 48-yarder he hit last week at Arizona. Junior kicker Jonathan Leiva, who coach Bobby Hauck believes is more accurate on closer kicks, is 2-for-3 on attempts this year.

In other news, the Rebels received their kickoff time for next week’s game at Houston. The game will start at 5 p.m. Las Vegas time and stream online at ESPN3.com. This week’s home game against Northern Illinois kicks off at 4 p.m. and will stream on the Mountain West Network/Campus Insiders.
