Study ranks Nevada sixth in nation in rate of women killed by men

Nevada ranks sixth in the nation in the rate of women killed by men, according to a new study published by a gun control advocacy group.

A nationwide analysis of 2012 homicide data by the Violence Policy Center in Washington, D.C., shows that nearly two female victims are killed at the hands of male victims for every 100,000 residents in Nevada.

Alaska ranked No. 1 at nearly 2.6 deaths per 100,000 residents, followed by South Carolina, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Mississippi.

Illinois, for which only limited data was available, ranked last.

Nationwide, 1,706 women were murdered by men in 2012, at a rate of 1.16 per 100,000.

In Nevada, 25 women were killed by men during that time period. For the 23 homicides in which the age of the victim was reported, one victim was younger than 18 and one victim was older than 65. The average age was 43.

Out of the 25 Nevada victims, two were black and 23 were white, according to the study. For homicides in which the weapon could be identified, 70 percent of victims were shot. More than half of the women were in a romantic relationship their accused killers, the study shows.
