Ty'Rek Wells had two touchdown runs today for the Clark High football team, helping them upset defending state champion Faith Lutheran 25-13 in the Division I-A Sunset opener.

Clark’s defense recorded six turnovers and held Faith Lutheran scoreless in the second half. The defense also scored when Veuki Taumoefolau grabbed an interception and returned it 15 yards for a touchdown.

Faith Lutheran led 13-6, but only briefly. Following the touchdown, Clark’s Marquice Stuart returned the ensuing kickoff 90 yards to even the score.

“(The kids) were so ecstatic. It was a great win for us. A great win,” Clark coach Don Willis said.

Faith Lutheran was considered the favorite in the Sunset, and Sierra Vista and Mojave — each led by college-caliber running backs — were expected to be in the mix.

Clark, who made the playoffs last season for the first time in more than a decade, appears to also be a legitimate contender.

“We are a good team. We are a top tier team,” Willis said. “We are starting to show that on the field.”

Clark improves to 2-0. It plays at Spring Valley next week.
