Two dead after two vehicles carrying family members crash on 215

Two people died in a vehicle crash Saturday evening, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

The NHP received a call about 7 p.m. after a Toyota Camry rear-ended a Mercedes-Benz while traveling westbound on the 215 Beltway. After hitting the car, the Toyota continued west on to the Decatur Boulevard offramp, where it traveled through the right paved shoulder, into a dirt and rock area north of the ramp and hit a block wall. The car then caught fire.

Three people were in the car. The driver, 25, was transported to University Medical Center along with a back-seat passenger, 58, who died at the hospital from injuries sustained in the crash. The front passenger, 21, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver is still at UMC in critical condition, according to the NHP.

No one in the Mercedes-Benz — who were family members of the occupants in the Toyota — was injured.

Highway Patrol Trooper Chelsea Stuenkel said the NHP is still investigating the cause of the accident, including the possibility of a medical episode causing the driver to crash. Alcohol is not considered to be a factor.

This is the 44th fatal accident this year in the Nevada Highway Patrol's southern command.
