First-time claims for unemployment down in August

CARSON CITY — Nevadans filing first-time claims for unemployment benefits dropped in August from the previous month, signaling a recovering economy, officials said.

The state Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation reported today that 13,063 jobless workers submitted initial claims. That compares with 15,441 in July.

The number, however, was up 1.2 percent from August 2013. First-time claims have fallen in 53 of the last 57 months.

The highest point for initial claims was December 2008, when 36,414 people applied for benefits.
