Vegas Play of the Day: Kansas City Royals at Cleveland Indians

Here’s the latest installment of the Play of the Day, which uses odds from the South Point. Our three sports writers started with a $10,000 bankroll — fictional, of course.

Kansas City Royals minus-110 at Cleveland Indians: $330 to win $300

This is a dangerous pick, because it would be very Kansas City of the Royals to find a way to blow a spot in the playoffs at this point. It’s all but guaranteed — 99.6 percent chance, per ESPN — so I’m betting that the Royals will keep building on a three-game winning streak while trying to erase their one-game deficit in the American League Central race.

But we can’t forget that these are still the Royals, especially with Jason Vargas on the mound tonight. He’s given up at least four earned runs in four of his last five starts, so really this is a bet that Kansas City will find a way to win despite its starting pitcher, not because of him.

The Royals are on the verge of their first trip to the playoffs since 1985, and there’s a chance it could be just a one-game stay. That’s why catching the Tigers and winning the division, and thus avoiding the wild card game, is so important. And that’s why I’m picking them to continue this little winning streak.
